Manitou

It is night, and you are dreaming, and your Manitou is there.

Each person, living and dead, has their own Manitou - a god they can appeal to for extra strength in times of dire need. You have spent the last week searching yours out, fasting and wandering through the wilderness, only to have him find you in your dream.

In the dream, you are standing, alone, in a copse of wild trees and grasses. In front of you upon the plains, a grand bonfire burns. Your Manitou is circling the fire, singing in a language you could not possibly know - and yet you start to sing along. Your heart, mind, and soul know the words. Your mouth forms them effortlessly.

You join your Manitou, and the two of you continue singing and circling the bonfire until the sun rises high above the plains. Then, you emerge from your dream, back into the waking world. Even before you feel the small weight sitting on your chest, before you see the buffalo totem hanging from your neck, you know the dream was not just a dream. The dream was real, and so is your Manitou.
