“Again.”
The weary, novice Guard does not want to continue her training. What she wants is to join her fellow Guards and Templars in fighting back the creeps sieging Camelot. The Guard can hear the battle raging outside Camelot’s walls, but her superiors won’t let her join the fight until this insipid Training Hologram clears her for duty.
“Again,” repeats the Training Hologram and finally, the Guard’s devotion to protocol breaks. She knows more and more of her fellows are dying each day. She knows she can help turn the tide of this siege.
“No, I’ve had quite enough of this,” says the Guard, sheathing her sword. “I’ve trained for months now. This week, I’ve easily beaten each simulation you set me up against. Clearance or no clearance, I’m going to go fight for my kingdom.”
The Training Hologram hears and considers the Guard’s words. Then, instead of a new combat simulation, the Hologram starts projecting footage from its archives.
“Each Training Hologram is programmed using footage from actual battles,” says the Hologram. “New footage is added to my archives each year. As a result, I have watched many of the Guards that I trained die.”
The Guard watches as the Hologram projects footage of battle after battle, death after death. Of wild, unlikely scenarios that the pictured Guards would never have conceived of.
“I am supposed to learn from these deaths,” says the Hologram. “I am supposed to use them to refine my simulations and help you prevail.”
“All the Guards I am showing you had more training than you. All of them acquitted themselves brilliantly in battle. All of them died protecting our kingdom.”
“I do not want to store footage of your death within my archives,” says the Hologram. “So I cannot clear you to fight until you finish your training.”
The Guard nods; she understands.
“Okay,” says the Guard. “Then let’s go again.”
